The Lingerie You Wear When Nobody's Watching

The Lingerie You Wear When Nobody's Watching

The Lingerie You Wear When Nobody's Watching

If nobody is going to see it, why does it matter what you're wearing underneath?

This is what I've overheard a lot in discussions about lingerie, without people realising this mindset really stems from the male gaze. That we're saving the good stuff for someone, even though we are the ones wearing the lingerie, wouldn't it make sense that we should have the most enjoyment out of it?

There is a particular kind of underwear we seem to save for someone else.

The beautiful set. The good lace. The knickers that make you feel like a slightly more glamorous version of yourself. They get pushed to the back of the drawer, waiting for a date night, a holiday, a birthday, a partner, something.

Meanwhile, Tuesday gets the stretched-out cotton briefs.

Why?

Because somewhere along the way, we've been taught that lingerie is something you wear to be seen.

And at Dream & Drive, we're not entirely buying it.

So *why* are we saving the good stuff?

There's a funny psychology to saving beautiful things.

We save the nice candles for when people come over. We save the expensive perfume for special occasions. We keep the good wine for the weekend.

And apparently, we save the good underwear for when someone else might take it off us.

But there's a problem with waiting for the right occasion.

Eventually, Tuesday becomes Wednesday. Wednesday becomes next week. The bottle of perfume sits untouched. The beautiful dress stays in the wardrobe. The lingerie remains folded neatly in the drawer.

And we've spent all that time waiting for our lives to become special enough for the nice things.

What if they already are?

What if the occasion is simply you getting dressed this morning?

Lingerie has traditionally been about being seen

For a long time, lingerie has been sold to women through somebody else's gaze.

Be seductive for him.

Look sexy for your partner.

Wear this on your wedding night.

Surprise him.

Make yourself irresistible.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to feel sexy for someone else. Desire is fun. Dressing up for your partner can be fun. Seduction can be fun.

But that's not the only reason lingerie gets to exist.

There is a whole other experience that happens when you put something beautiful on and nobody knows you're wearing it.

You're the only person who feels the lace against your skin.

You're the only person who knows there's something slightly outrageous underneath your jeans.

You're the only person who gets the tiny thrill of catching a glimpse of it when you're getting dressed.

That's pretty fucking fabulous.

There's a difference between being sexy and being seen as sexy, this is the bit I think we don't talk about enough.

Feeling sexy and being perceived as sexy are two completely different things.

One is about you.

The other is about someone else's reaction to you.

And we've become so accustomed to the second that sometimes we forget the first exists.

You don't need a date to wear the lingerie.

You don't need a partner.

You don't need anyone to compliment you.

You don't even need to leave the house.

You can put on your favourite set, pull on your oldest pair of jeans and go to the supermarket.

Nobody needs to know.

In fact, that's kind of the point.

The secret underneath an ordinary outfit

There is something delicious about wearing beautiful lingerie underneath something completely unremarkable.

Your work clothes.

A T-shirt.

Your favourite jeans.

The outfit you've worn approximately 700 times.

Nobody looking at you knows that underneath it all you're wearing something delicate, ridiculous, romantic, sexy or completely you.

And perhaps that's one of the most personal forms of self-expression there is.

Because you're not performing it.

You're not posting it.

You're not waiting for someone to tell you that you look good.

You're simply experiencing it for yourself.

Take the Lilac Outline Bralette, for example. It's deliberately designed to sit somewhere between comfort and something worth showing off - fuller coverage without trying to make your body disappear. It's the sort of piece that works beautifully underneath an ordinary everyday outfit, whether anyone else sees it or not.

That's the kind of lingerie we love.

Not underwear that asks you to become somebody else.

Lingerie that makes the person you already are feel a little more fabulous.

Make getting dressed a tiny ritual

It doesn't have to be complicated.

Maybe it's the five minutes in the morning where you choose something you actually love.

Maybe you put on the matching set instead of grabbing the first pair of knickers from the drawer.

Maybe you spray your favourite perfume even though you're working from home.

Maybe you put on lipstick to go nowhere.

These tiny rituals can feel almost insignificant.

But there's something lovely about doing something purely because it makes you feel good.

Not because it's productive.

Not because somebody else will notice.

Not because it makes you more desirable.

Just because you like it.

That's self-expression without an audience.

And yes, you can make it as outrageous as you like

This doesn't have to mean delicate lace and romantic little sets, either.

Maybe your version of feeling fabulous is something a little more fuck me.

That's where pieces like our Dark Belle Ouvert Knickers come in.

They're open knickers, they're unapologetically sexy, and they're made from deadstock lace - but they're also designed to actually be worn, rather than relegated to the “special occasion” drawer. They have a cotton-lined gusset and comfortable scalloped elastic, because apparently we can have our cake and eat it too.

And perhaps that's the whole philosophy.

Your lingerie can be practical and provocative.

Comfortable and hot.

Everyday and completely indulgent.

It doesn't have to choose.

Lingerie can be a gift to yourself

We're used to thinking of lingerie as something we buy for someone else.

A present for him.

Something to wear on a special night.

Something designed to make us more desirable.

But what happens when we turn that around?

What if the person you're dressing for is you?

What if buying yourself beautiful lingerie isn't about fixing something about your body or making yourself more attractive?

What if it's simply about saying:

I like beautiful things.

I like how this feels.

I like how I feel when I'm wearing it.

And that's enough.

Because you don't need to wait until you've lost weight.

You don't need to wait until your boobs look different.

You don't need to wait until you're going on holiday.

You don't need to wait until someone else wants to see you naked.

You certainly don't need to wait until you've become some future, supposedly improved version of yourself.

The body you're living in today deserves the good underwear.

So stop saving it

Wear the lace.

Wear the matching set.

Wear the ridiculous knickers underneath your oldest jeans.

Wear something that makes you feel like a complete babe while you answer emails.

Wear it to the supermarket.

Wear it while you're doing absolutely nothing.

Wear it when nobody is watching.

Especially then.

Because maybe the most powerful thing about lingerie isn't the moment someone else sees you wearing it.

Maybe it's the moment you remember that you chose it for yourself.

And at Dream & Drive, we think that's a pretty good reason to get dressed.

Sexy looks good on you. Even when nobody's looking.
